A Swede of Ethiopian and Eritrean heritage, nothing about Bishat is conventional. Though she has struggled with it in the past, her inability to find a single identity is something Bishat has learned to embrace:
“People used to try and box me into an RnB or Soul category, and it used to mess with my head. I felt this huge expectation that my voice should match my looks, and it just didn’t. I didn’t have this big, soulful voice. So it took me a while to understand and accept that although I love soul music, I don’t sound like that. And that’s fine.”
Now, more confident than ever, Bishat is out with a new single, “Mine.” Written during a rough bout of insomnia, the song’s sparse production allows Bishat’s creeping vocals to carry the track.
